Summary

WowThis is the first time that I have read a book by this author, and I will be reading more of her! This story drags you in and does not let you go。 If you want a book with suspence and intrigue and love and fun then this it it。

This was a wild ride… absolutely in no way was what I was expecting but somehow was still kind of amazing

This is like mafia dark romance with family drama。 A little unbelievable but it’s what kept me turning the page。 A few content warnings。 A bit of a toxic relationship but again if that’s your thing then there you go!

The Dark One

I've been reading this author's books since the first book published and she has over 60 books at this point。 This is the one series of hers that I had not read and damn it, why did I wait so long??? Honestly, I was thinking this is going to be some older romance which is not super spicy and no fantasy at all so I procrastinated and was very wrong to。 The book starts out with a bang literally and figuratively, LOL。 Okay, almost a bang but I was like, "hello to you too!" Lucien is so funny and easy going that's it's so sexy。 He had me laughing most of the book from his cute, boyish, and slutty attitude。 Also, who knew Jennifer could make a murder mystery so much fun and hot? Well, now I know。 。。。more

Naprawdę solidna。Jeśli ktoś chce w romansie czegoś więcej niż tylko typowych wątków, to myślę, że warto jest się nią zainteresować。

I like that it’s romance with some mystery, I read Verity right before this one so I saw the ending coming。 I know there’s a shirtless man on the cover but the book isn’t very sexual, it’s plot focused mostly。 Lucien is not that interesting of a guy so I wasn’t rooting for him that much but I was entertained throughout the novel。

2。5ish stars (but I might still read at least one more in the series 🤦‍♀️😂)。 It was so over the top dramatic and borderline ridiculous that it didn’t keep my attention very well。 But I didn’t hate the characters and I’m curious about the brothers。 So - we’ll see。

Not sure what was up with this book but it had a lot of typing mistakes; like “his” when it should have been “this。” “Up in the hair” instead of “up in the air,” sort of errors were prevalent。 Seems like a proofreader would have been money well spent。 I basically came for the setting。 I like books set in New Orleans。 Most of the story takes place in a mansion away from the city。 You don’t get much of a sense of the Big Easy culture from this book, (not that it was promised but I would have enjoy Not sure what was up with this book but it had a lot of typing mistakes; like “his” when it should have been “this。” “Up in the hair” instead of “up in the air,” sort of errors were prevalent。 Seems like a proofreader would have been money well spent。 I basically came for the setting。 I like books set in New Orleans。 Most of the story takes place in a mansion away from the city。 You don’t get much of a sense of the Big Easy culture from this book, (not that it was promised but I would have enjoyed it。)I’m already reading the next in the series but I’ve almost immediately run into a continuity issue。 In Book One, Richard who is married to Livie tells Julia that he and his wife never had kids。 But then in book 2, we meet Nicolette who seems to be their daughter。 This is a big peeve。 。。。more

Julia seriously annoyed me towards the second half and I have no good reason whyyy

The suspense was lacking and this all progressed far too quickly for my liking, ending up feeling kind of rushed。 It doesn't really help that there is nothing redeemable or likeable about the love interest, Lucien。 This was definitely lacking, and the tension was not there at all。 The suspense was lacking and this all progressed far too quickly for my liking, ending up feeling kind of rushed。 It doesn't really help that there is nothing redeemable or likeable about the love interest, Lucien。 This was definitely lacking, and the tension was not there at all。 。。。more

Ein sehr gutes Buch, was mich endlich wieder zum lesen gebracht hat ☺️ Top Empfehlung!!

I enjoyed the book about a curse and hot and heavy love。 It was spicy but not crazy intense and the plot was decent。 I didn’t really fall in love with any of the characters but it was a good just fluff novel。

This was okay-ish although I do feel I’m being generous on the ratingThe main issue was the plot, it was predictable and poorly executed I did t feel any particular attachment to any of the characters and couldn’t care less whether or not they survived。The little introduced plots to make us want to read the other books weren’t a success eitherI can’t really tell if I feel like the story could’ve been done better or if the potential just isn’t there but can tell that I won’t read the rest of the This was okay-ish although I do feel I’m being generous on the ratingThe main issue was the plot, it was predictable and poorly executed I did t feel any particular attachment to any of the characters and couldn’t care less whether or not they survived。The little introduced plots to make us want to read the other books weren’t a success eitherI can’t really tell if I feel like the story could’ve been done better or if the potential just isn’t there but can tell that I won’t read the rest of the seriesThe writing was good but I didn’t expect any less from Jennifer L。 ArmentroutI wanted to give her non fantasy books a try and have to say that I’m disappointed but that won’t keep me from reading her other books in the future because honestly she’s a NA queen 👑 。。。more

It started out really well! And I have to admit, I went in with high expectations - I mean, it's Jennifer L。 Armentrout, come on! She's one of my favorite authors and I can't help but anticipate the best when it comes to her books。BUT。。。 Yeah, there's a "but" this time, and it really hurts to admit that。As much as I was enjoying the first half of the story。。。 the second half had me rolling my eyes so hard。。。 I kind of had a passing thought that THAT was the actual situation with Lucian's sister It started out really well! And I have to admit, I went in with high expectations - I mean, it's Jennifer L。 Armentrout, come on! The man she allegedly loves more than anything, the man she's sacrificed everything she had for, lies there killed by her own brother and she just - what? - goes into a storyteller mode and spews out everything, including how she'd killed her own mother? And yes, I get that she's unstable or maybe even crazy。 But her unstable state of mind would've pushed her in the OPPOSITE direction in this kind of situation, don't you think? Anyway, enough about Maddie - she gets killed by her brother, too after all。 Yes, I am rolling my eyes while writing this - can you really blame me? Because, CLEARLY, killing her was the perfect solution there。 (hide spoiler)] - If you don't want to get attacked by an angry rant about the ending, don't click this。 Now, Julia and Lucian's relationship is the actual reason why I gave this book three whole stars - JLA always writes the best couples and I LOVED these two as well (well, maybe apart from that dramatic ending but let's not talk about it or else you'd see another spoiler-filled rant here)。 If there was no Julia and Lucian, the book would just be。。。 bad。 I'm sorry to say that but it really must be my least favorite from this author。But guess what?I'm still going to finish this series! This author definitely deserves way more than just a second chance。 So if it's your first book by her - I'm sorry。 Just trust me and don't give up just yet! 。。。more

I always get those two confused。”This book was weird and creepy, but in a good way。 It really had me hooked with the plot, tension, suspense, and romance。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book sounded really good, but the execution fell flat。 The chemistry between Julia and Lucian was not believable。 At all。 The trick Lucian played on Julia the first night they met, the night of her going away party, all in the name of vetting her as his sister's nurse, was a douche move, for sure, but Julia forgave him too quickly IMO。 When she arrived at the mansion and realized Taylor was Lucian, there was a lot of narrative about how outraged she was, yet all she did was say "excuse me" This book sounded really good, but the execution fell flat。 The chemistry between Julia and Lucian was not believable。 At all。 The trick Lucian played on Julia the first night they met, the night of her going away party, all in the name of vetting her as his sister's nurse, was a douche move, for sure, but Julia forgave him too quickly IMO。 When she arrived at the mansion and realized Taylor was Lucian, there was a lot of narrative about how outraged she was, yet all she did was say "excuse me" and walk out of the room?? Lame。 She should have slapped him silly and gone off on him。 I mean, if you're going to walk out of the job anyway, why not give the guy a piece of your mind?I've never heard a man's mouth described as a perfect cupid's bow either。。。doesn't sound sexy to me。。。makes me picture a little mouth, and on a big guy, yuck。 And the way he lowers his lashes and bites his lip。。。that is what a woman would do when being coy or flirtatious。 On a supposedly alpha male, some of his actions come across as too feminine。 Some of the sayings and phrases the author uses make no sense。。。like "If two girls on trikes appeared, she was out like a belly button。" I get what the author was trying to say, but it wasn't funny。 Or "he remained quiet as sin" or her description of the swimming pool and the toiletries in Julia's shower that were too fancy with a name she couldn't pronounce, or when Lucian asks of Julia。。。"How can you be here and be the most beautiful creature I've ever seen?"。。。 like the two are mutually exclusive?? All of these little things added up to a book that earned way too many eye rolls from me。 I stopped paying attention halfway through and only skimmed the rest。 。。。more

I did enjoy this book, but it didn't knock my socks off or anything。 It was a quick, enjoyable read, but not a book I could find myself wanting to read again, so that bumps it down to 3 stars。 I did enjoy this book, but it didn't knock my socks off or anything。 It was a quick, enjoyable read, but not a book I could find myself wanting to read again, so that bumps it down to 3 stars。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm not even sure what to say。 It was sexy, spooky, all of the De Vincent brothers were swoon worthy and Julia was a fairly likeable and level headed character。 But that twist? This book is different to the kind of books I’m used to reading but I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Set in New Orleans and coming through with the historic and haunted vibes。 Julia a nurse making big life decisions to move and start a new job following her old divorce。 The building romance with her employer Lucian had such great tension and development。 I found the brothers and the family dynamic super interesting to read about and I’m ready to see more of the dark secrets the family has hidden。 (Also This book is different to the kind of books I’m used to reading but I thoroughly enjoyed it。 Set in New Orleans and coming through with the historic and haunted vibes。 Julia a nurse making big life decisions to move and start a new job following her old divorce。 The building romance with her employer Lucian had such great tension and development。 I found the brothers and the family dynamic super interesting to read about and I’m ready to see more of the dark secrets the family has hidden。 (Also big up Richard for his conversation with Julia towards the end)。 。。。more
